Purpose: The purposes of this study were to explore sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and fall efficacy and to investigate relations among them for older women dwelling in community.
Methods: The study utilized the cross-sectional descriptive correlational design using the face to face interview method. The study subjects were over 65-year-old women participating in one of the health promotion program offered from the community welfare center in Y city. The study scales were composed of a total of 26 items measuring demographic characteristics, sleep quality, day time sleepiness, and fall efficacy. Data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, and Pearson"s correlation analysis using SPSS WIN 13.0 program.
Results: A total of 156 subjects were included for the analysis. 111 subjects reported high sleep quality. There were statistically significant differences in total sleep time(t=5.93, p£¼.001), daytime sleepiness(t=-2.31, p=.022) between high and low sleep quality groups. In the group of low sleep quality, statistically significant positive relationship was found between day time sleepiness and fall efficacy(r=.331, p=.026).
Conclusion: The findings of this study provides useful information for developing nursing interventions against fall in accordance with the elders" sleep quality.
